Veldhuyzen Kaas wins Gold with Calora 18% Pikant!

There we have it: the tastiest matured light Gouda cheese is Calora 18% Pikant! This cheese, made by Veldhuyzen Kaas (part of MAAZ Cheese), won Gold at the Gouda Cheese Awards 2019 on 6 June. Over the coming year, it will be carrying the label ‘tastiest cheese in the Netherlands’.

Veldhuyzen Kaas

Veldhuyzen Kaas is specialised in the national and international sale of Dutch cheese specialties. The brands Calora, Basiron, Montana, Veldhuyzen, Dolaner and Hommage are all well known around the world. Veldhuyzen Kaas has been awarded multiple times for bringing remarkable innovations and top-quality products onto the market.

Interest

It was the first time the jury made its decision in front of an audience. And an audience there was, indeed. The already crowded Gouda cheese market attracted hundreds of people who not only wanted to taste a cube or two, but also wanted to see what culinary journalist Janny van der Heijden (known for programmes such as Heel Holland Bakt) and the other judges made of the cheese samples.

Cheese tested by consumers

The Gouda Cheese Awards are an important and unique event in the Netherlands. Because it is not a technical inspection but a neutral taste test: the cheese is actually tasted and judged by the consumer. The competition is organised by the Nederlands Nationaal Kaaskeur Concours (Dutch National Cheese Selection Competition, NNKC) in collaboration with the Gouda cheese market, the Goudse Waag, the Samenwerkende Ondernemersverenigingen Gouda (Cooperative of Entrepreneurial Associations Gouda, SOG) and the Municipality of Gouda. The preliminaries took place in late May at the Centrum voor Smaakonderzoek (Centre for Taste Research, CSO) in Wageningen.
